The previous year has made a major breakthrough in the field of virtual reality. Tech savvy people had a lot to digest with the appearance of VR headsets and VR apps. VR even has its own dedicated app stores on multiple platforms. Microsoft isn’t a company that would just “sit one out” when it comes to trends and great business opportunities. Therefore, it had announced some time ago that it’s working on something called Windows Holographic. This would be an alternative to the other VR solutions provided by top manufacturers so far.
Windows Holographic gets a name change
That being said, there are important news about Windows Holographic. It might not be appropriate to refer to it that way since it has recently received a name change. Microsoft’s upcoming project is now called Windows Mixed Reality. There was also a statement regarding this change, as many were curious where it had originated from.
Microsoft simply stated that the new name does a better job in encompassing what the company is trying to achieve with the product. Users should also know that this isn’t just another VR headset. It seeks to combine the elements of VR with those of AR, which is augmented reality. Augmented reality is different from virtual reality by incorporating virtual elements into the real world.
Specifications for the early model have been announced
The device that will carry the Windows Mixed Reality technology is manufactured by Acer. Here is an early look at the specifications that will be shipping with Acer Windows Mixed Reality:
- The device will feature two display panes using LCD technology, providing a resolution of 1440 x 1440. The refresh rate for the screen will be 90 Hz.
- It will feature solutions for both broadcasting audio and a microphone. A 3.5 mm Jack will be used for this.
- There will also be a 2.0 HDMI and USB 3.0 connectivity solution.
There is still a long time before any consumer will be fortunate enough to get their hands on one of these. Currently, Microsoft and Acer and putting the finishing touches on the developer model which will be sent out to a few developers to try out. It remains to be seen what the overall that Windows Mixed Reality manages to make.
